I just wanted to pass on to the rest of America a discussion my wife and I had at the Parking Plaza at Disneyland.
For background, my wife is disabled and requires the use of the disabled ramp to get on the trams. On Sunday we approached the ramp area and was informed by the parking employees, that soon we would no longer be able to use the ramp to get to the park entrance. First we wondered if they were restricting the ramp to wheelchair only, but then they told us that Disney is getting rid of the disabled ramp altogether.
For those of you who are familiar with the Parking Lot trams, the first car is designated for wheelchairs. It has collapsible seats and anchors to tie down wheel chairs. The front half of the car is designated for this purpose. Soon this front car is going away and will be replaced with a regular car.
This car is also used for people with large strollers. I was told that all strollers will need to be folded up before entering the tram or you’ll have to walk back to parking.
So what about the disabled? Disneyland will be getting new vans to transport the disabled. You will load in what is currently Pinnochio and will be dropped of at the disabled area on the opposite end of the loading area near World of Disney. This was supposed to come online before the summer rush, but the new shuttles were not ready.
We asked why they are changing this and we were told that they wanted to be more like Walt Disney World. For those of you familiar with WDW. There are no disabled cars attached to the parking tram, because if you’re disabled you park near the front gate at every parks (which was not a problem for us). At Disneyland, if you want to walk, it’s a ¼ mile jaunt to parking.
I believe this change will happen soon.
