D23 Expo Day 1

It's begun...my ultimate geek experience of 2009. Here's my little report of Day 1 of D23 Expo.

I arrived at the Anaheim Convention Center and quickly got my badge. There was no line at all. They did warn me that since I have a 4-day pass, I'm going to have to wear my D23 bracelet for 4 days.

Let me go over the sessions that I went to.

The first was the Bob Iger Keynote. We were not allowed to bring any electronics in. I had to check my camera and celphone in before entering. Good reason. We were shown the first 30 minutes of the Princess and the Frog. I was not a fan after seeing the trailer a few months ago. Now I'm a fan. the movie looks good. I know that Disney did not want the first 30 minutes to show up on the internet. time will tell how effective this was.

Bob Iger comes out and mentioned that no other company could ever pull off an event like this. It's true. What other company had a broad brand of products and a loyal fan base.

Next was the Disney Legends. All I can say was I underestimated the talent of Tom Bergeron as a host. He's funny, quick and knows how to host an event. Then there's seeing Betty White and Robin Williams on stage at the same time.

Afterward I quickly headed over to the Beauty and the Beast Panel. Highlights here was watching Glen Keane draw the Beast live and then give it to an audience member. We were then treated to the first 15 minutes of Beauty and the Beast in 3-d and also the Ballroom scene.

Things I didn't know. Hundreds of actors auditioned for the role of the beast. The actors either struggled with not sounding like a beast or trying to hard to sound like a beast. No one could believe the teen hearthrob Robbie Benson could do it, but he was clearly the best choice.

There's going to be a making of book coming out next year. The reason there was no Making of Book before was that Disney did not believe in the movie to be a success to warrant a Making of Book.

The 3-D footage that we saw was great. They took great pains to make the 2-d drawing have depth.

Lastly I went to the Sherman Brother's Panel and Screening of the Documentary of The Boys - the Sherman Brothers' Story. This was an excellent movie. I highly recommend it and hope it gets Oscar consideration for a documentary.

Who would have believe the composers of the best Disney songs could not get a long and live an estraged life. They have not spoke for almost 8 years. The movie was made by Richard and Robert's sons, who have not spoken in 40 years and wanted to know why their fathers could not get a long. It's also a story of these two truly prolific composers.

They were described as the last of the great American composers, ranking up there with the Gerschwins. I agree. it's late so more tomorrow.
